How much it costs

The true “cost” of savings

If $4/hour sounds attractive, keep in mind that it's basically a survival wage in most parts of the world. If your employee is working just to survive, you'll get the bare minimum.

There's also no loyalty. If they get an offer at $5/hour (a 25% raise), they're gone. And yes, they're definitely looking for another job, and probably already have one.

Depending on location and experience, $6–10/hour is reasonable if you want someone good, dedicated, and loyal. Any less and you're stepping over dollars to pick up pennies.
